Tips & Best Practices

Effective Memory Saving

  • β€’Be descriptive - Add context when saving notes
  • β€’Use Markdown - Format content for better readability
  • β€’Save selectively - Quality over quantity improves search results
  • β€’Add tags immediately - Organize as you save for easier retrieval

Better Search Results

  • β€’Ask naturally - 'How do I configure logging?' works better than 'logging config'
  • β€’Be specific - Include key terms for more precise results
  • β€’Try variations - Different phrasings may surface different memories
  • β€’Combine with tags - Filter by tag first, then search within results

Organizing with Tags

  • β€’Use consistent naming - 'react-hooks' not 'React Hooks' or 'reacthooks'
  • β€’Keep tags focused - Use specific tags like 'api-auth' instead of generic 'code'
  • β€’Review popular tags - Check Settings to see your most-used tags
  • β€’Merge similar tags - Combine duplicates from the tag management panel

Organizing Content

  • β€’Use workspaces - Separate work, personal, and projects
  • β€’Move memories - Reorganize by moving to different workspaces

  • β€’Check storage usage - Monitor local storage in Settings

Frequently Asked Questions

How does semantic search work?
Memory Loom uses an AI model (all-MiniLM-L6-v2) that runs entirely in your browser. It understands the meaning of your search, not just keywords. For example, searching 'authentication methods' will find memories about OAuth, JWT, passwords, login systems, etc. You can also combine semantic search with tag filters for precise results.
How do Tags work?
Tags help you organize and filter memories. Click the tag icon on any memory to add tags. Tags are normalized (lowercase, spaces become dashes) and suggestions appear as you type based on existing tags. You can filter search results by clicking tags, and manage all tags (rename, merge, delete) from Settings.
How do I search by tags?
Click on any tag shown on a memory card to filter by that tag. You can combine tag filtering with semantic search - first select a tag to filter, then type a search query. The results will be memories that have both the tag AND match your search.
What are Related Memories?
When viewing a memory, you'll see 'Related Memories' showing similar content based on semantic similarity. This knowledge graph helps you discover connections between your saved content. Click any related memory to view it.
What are Workspaces?
Workspaces let you organize memories into separate collections. Each workspace has its own memories, completely isolated from others. Create workspaces for Work, Personal, Research, specific projects, or clients. You can move memories between workspaces anytime. Search only finds memories in the current workspace.
How do I create a Workspace?
Click the workspace dropdown in the header, then 'Manage Workspaces', then '+ New Workspace'. Enter a name, optionally choose an icon and color, then click Create.
How do I move a memory to another workspace?
Click the move icon (arrow) on any memory card. A dropdown will appear showing all your workspaces. Select the destination workspace and the memory will be moved instantly.
How do I sort my memories?
Use the sort dropdown at the top of the memory list. Options include: Last Activity (default - most recent create, update, or view), Recently Created, Recently Updated, Recently Viewed, and Most Viewed. Your sort preference is remembered.
Where is my data stored?
All your data is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB. Nothing is sent to external servers. If you connect Google Drive, your data syncs to YOUR account only - we never have access to it.
Can I access my memories on another device?
Yes! Enable Google Drive backup in settings to sync your memories across devices. Your data is stored in your own Google Drive account and syncs automatically every 5 minutes.
How does the Q&A feature work?
Click the Q&A tab, type your question (e.g., 'What is the API endpoint for users?'), and press Enter. The system finds relevant memories using semantic search, then extracts the most relevant passage as your answer. Answers come directly from your memories (not AI-generated), with source links so you can verify the full context.
How do I edit a memory?
Click the edit button (pencil icon) on any memory, or press Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on Mac). This opens the rich text editor where you can modify title and content. The editor supports Markdown formatting, and content auto-saves. Press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S) to save, or Escape to cancel.
What formatting is supported in the editor?
The rich text editor supports Markdown: headings (#, ##, ###), bold (**text**), italic (*text*), code (`code`), code blocks (```), bullet lists (- item), numbered lists (1. item), and links ([text](url)). Formatting is preserved when you save.
Can I open Memory Loom in a separate window?
Yes! Click the settings gear icon, then select 'Open in Window'. This opens Memory Loom in a standalone popup window that you can resize and position independently from your browser tabs.
What file formats can I upload?
Memory Loom supports Markdown (.md) files imported as-is, PDF (.pdf) with text extraction, and Word (.docx) with text extraction. If Google Drive is connected, original files are kept as attachments.
How do file attachments work?
You can attach files to any memory by dragging and dropping images, PDFs, or other files (up to 10MB each) onto a memory card. Attachments are stored in your Google Drive and can be viewed using the built-in attachment viewer, which supports image preview with zoom, and PDF viewing with page navigation.
How do I view attachments?
Click on any attachment thumbnail to open the attachment viewer. For images, you can zoom and pan. For PDFs, you can navigate pages using the controls. Click the download button to save the file locally, or click outside to close the viewer.
Are my edits saved automatically?
Yes! Memory Loom includes auto-save and version tracking. When you edit a memory, changes are saved automatically. Each save increments the memory's version number, and the 'updatedAt' timestamp is refreshed. You can see when a memory was last modified in the memory details.
How do Categories work?
Categories are generated automatically based on your memory content using pattern recognition. Similar memories are grouped together. Categories are workspace-scoped and update dynamically as you add more memories.
Does Memory Loom work offline?
Yes! Once the AI model is loaded (takes ~30 seconds on first use), Memory Loom works completely offline. Your saved pages and search remain available without internet. Changes sync when you're back online.
How do I delete a memory?
Click the Delete button (trash icon) on any memory and confirm. The memory and its attachments are permanently removed. You can also delete entire workspaces from the workspace manager (except the Default workspace).
Is my data private?
100% private. All AI processing happens locally in your browser. We never see, collect, or have access to your bookmarks, notes, or searches. Your data never leaves your device except for optional Google Drive backup to YOUR account.
What gets synced to Google Drive?
All memories (content, titles, URLs), attachments, and all workspaces are included in a single backup. Sync happens automatically every 5 minutes, or you can trigger manual sync from settings.

Troubleshooting

⚠️Extension not loading

Refresh the page, close and reopen the side panel, or check chrome://extensions for errors. Try disabling and re-enabling the extension.

⚠️Search not finding results

The AI model may still be loading (first time takes ~30 seconds). Wait for loading to complete. Also ensure you have saved memories in the current workspace, and try different keywords or natural language phrases.

⚠️Google Drive sync not working

Check your internet connection and verify Google Drive is connected in settings. Try disconnecting and reconnecting, or trigger a manual sync from settings.

⚠️Page content not saving correctly

Some websites block content extraction. Try selecting the specific text you want and using right-click > 'Save to Memory Loom' instead of saving the whole page.

⚠️Memories not appearing after sync

Make sure you're in the correct workspace. Memories are workspace-scoped, so check the workspace dropdown to switch if needed.

⚠️Tags not showing correct counts

Tag counts are recalculated when you open the tag dropdown or settings. If counts seem off, open Settings and view the tag management section to refresh counts.

⚠️Cannot add attachments

File attachments require Google Drive to be connected. Go to Settings, connect your Google Drive account, then try attaching files again.

⚠️Editor not saving changes

Press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac) to manually save, or wait for auto-save. Ensure you're not accidentally pressing Escape which cancels editing without saving.

⚠️Keyboard shortcut not working

Chrome extension shortcuts may conflict with other extensions or system shortcuts. Check chrome://extensions/shortcuts to view and customize Memory Loom shortcuts.
